We All Gotta Run on Something

By Carter Colton

We all gotta run on something

I’m still tryna figure out what I run on.

Some people run on caffeine, others money.

Some on fame, others greed.

Still some on hope, faith, trust.

There are those who rely on love.

They say love is the greatest motivator.

Then there’s me.

What do I run on?

I look at those who sit out on the streets.

Beggars in tattered clothes

Sleeping under the stars…

On cobweb sheets.

I know what they run on.

Or at least, I think

They run on addiction–

Meth, heroin, cocaine–

You name it.

I wonder what politicians run on.

Wonder what makes them tick?

There are those trains that run on steam.

Gross, filthy coal shoved in their mouths.

That must taste good.

But they run on it–

Gotta mean it can’t taste all that bad, right?

Wonder what those people in Hollywood run on.

Wonder what makes them tick?

Airing all that dirty laundry for

Impressionable noses to smell

And wondering why their lives crashed and burned–

Now that something’s an odd one to run on,

It don’t matter though they say

We all gotta run on something.

Something that keeps us amused.

Just like bombs.

We run and run and run on.

Let’s hope we never run outta fuse.
